Provision of Communication Infrastructure for Hocktieth’s Projects

Business Requirement

Hocktieth is a major player in the design, manufacture and installation of power stations through the world. One of the issues in the installation of such solutions is to provide a reliable, cost effective and scalable communications infrastructure during the installation phase. Hockteith had a requirement to design a communication solution capable of running conventional voice, data and IP telephony for the construction phase of the project and thereafter to use the equipment as the core communications platform within the completed site. The system would have to give full integration with the current database software, unified messaging and interconnectivity to all other offices.

The Solution

The infrastructure team from Ryedale Telecommunications recommended an infrastructure consisting of a fibre optic backbone using single mode 9/125 fibre optic cable linking all office locations back to the main site’s communication room. The solution created six different node locations throughout the expansive site which spread across a 10 km area. Each office location had access to 100mbs connection for each user at their desktops with power over Ethernet for IP telephony. The recommendation was to install Cat 6 structured wiring.
The active data equipment recommended for this site was the HP Procurve range of data switches with POE. The fibre connectivity connecting into the HP equipment and the creation of separate VLAN’s offered an ideal solution to the project.
The recommended telephone solution was the Avaya range of telephone switches. The changing site and rapid deployment requirement was supported by the Avaya solution.
